Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Hello! I am a Visual Arts teacher who teaches every student in our school. I teach 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grades. My school is in a high-need, urban community and almost every single one of our kids come from families who have never had a college graduate in the family. Our school is project-based and the arts are highly valued by the faculty and the students.

Our school is running out of resources. The Visual Arts classes at our school are by far the kids' favorite. Some kids have told me that art class was the one reason that made them come to school that day. My classes revolve heavily on painting, but over the years the kids have become more and more interested in 3-Dimensional art and sculpture. I would love to be able to provide them with the opportunity to explore the realms of 3-Dimensional creativity.

What our kids really need are the materials to allow them to get hands-on experience in sculpture. I have requested simple clays for early skill building projects, and more advanced hard-drying clays and plaster strips for long-term projects. This will allow the kids to build their skills first with the cheaper clay and then work their way to creating figures, busts, and creatures that will be strong and able to be painted when they are finished. These materials will be used to create college-level projects. They will be creating busts and props with these sculptural materials that will be used during a public exhibition of their work once the project is complete. Students will be writing essays about the art piece, what it reflects and relates, symbolism and metaphor used in the piece, comparing and contrasting their work with other genres in art history and elaborating on their process. These materials will allow for this deep, rigorous, academically challenging project to take place. Ultimately, it will be enhancing skills and preparing students for the challenges they will face when they make it to college.

Your generous donation will provide these amazing, creative city kids with the opportunity to channel their energies into the positive outlets they crave. These materials are going to produce incredible works that I will be put in school and community exhibitions as well as city-wide youth art shows. Any donation you can provide for this project will open new doors for young people that they may not have realized exist for them. I promise that you will touch their lives in a deep and profound way. Thank you so much!
