Super Science Students

My students need a variety of genres to work in literacy centers because they are all ELL students. They need the exposure and to work in partnerships while reading. They need subscriptions to Scholastic Science magazine.

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Most of my students arrive to school with hope and excitement for their day in class. There is a lack of reading skills and my goal is to develop their language and love for reading through exposure to all genres. Story Works is a great, interactive piece that will allow me to work towards my goal.

My class is solely a 4th grade ESL classroom.

Currently I have 33 students that seem eager to learn and have hope in their eyes. They enjoy our classroom and working together on special activities in Science and Reading. Reading and Math are very difficult for my language learners and they are struggling to even reach grade level. I have various Hispanic cultures, Arabic, Bengali, African and Chinese students. Seven of my students are brand new to the United States and I need to work with them on learning letters and sounds. My other students are working currently at a second grade level with most students reading on a level J-K. My goal is to work with them and push them to practice reading and develop skills and a genuine love for reading. Just from the beginning of the year, I have noticed that my students are developing an excitement for reading. My school is located in the Bronx and is struggling with students that are not on grade level. I am hopeful for all.

My Project

I would like to use my magazines to build knowledge during guided reading. I also love that their is a play in the magazine that will allow me to help my students build fluency skills while being exposed to speaking out loud and taking on a role. I have used plays in the past to build community in my classroom and to develop my ESL student's language skills. I also love that each magazine contains a poem. Poetry is difficult for ESL students to understand and to write. I write poetry and read poetry all year to develop rhyming, rhythm and how to write verse. My students will be engaged in whole class mini-lessons, small group guided reading sessions and independent reading activities while using the magazine.

There are very limited resources in my school.

My students are very poor and it is difficult for me to collect the money I need to purchase the magazine on my own. With a class size as large as 33 and sometimes more, I cannot afford to order magazines and books for my children on my own. I rely on scholastic points to fill my classroom library and now Donors Choose will hopefully fund Story Works. I think that this magazine with be a great resource for my students and will promote growth.
