Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

I teach science to 6th, 7th and 8th grade students at a small, public charter school located in an urban center. The community that my school is in is plagued with violence and drugs; many students drop out of middle and high school. Our school offers families in our community an alternative: small class sizes, dedicated teachers, innovative teaching methods, and a commitment to holistic urban education.

For the past 2 years, I have organized a science fair for my 6th, 7th and 8th grade students. Students are required to create, plan, design and implement a scientific study of their choice. After doing their experiments, my students present their findings at the school's science fair. Each year, finding adequate money in the budget for student presentation supplies is difficult, if not impossible. The budgetary strain leads to a feeling of substandard presentations among the students and the adult attendees at the science fair. My students would create beautiful presentation boards to show off their hard work if only they had the right supplies!

I am requesting 7 different types of basic office supply for science fair presentations. The most essential are the presentation boards themselves; on a tri-fold board with a bright-colored background, my students could post photographs, scientific methodologies as well as results and conclusions to share with the science fair attendees. I am also requesting several different types of markers with which they can decorate their presentation boards. Also on the list are papers and glues so that my students can make their presentations really stand out! Finally, I would like folders in which students can file their data logs, safety contracts, due dates and research papers for the science fair.

You will make it possible for my students to showcase their work in a way that makes them feel proud. I can just imagine the excitement on my students' faces when they see that we have real supplies with which to make their presentations. They work so hard each year for the science fair; this year, with the funding of this project, all of their hard work could really stand out and look excellent. Your support will make our 2010 science fair a huge success! Thank you so much!
