My Students

My students and their families don't have a lot, but they DO a lot. I cannot adequately describe how much they inspire me to better myself as an educator and a public servant.

I am the Resource Specialist Teacher and case manager in an urban public school for a group of approximately 25 students with Individualized Education Plans (IEPs) in general education settings.

My duties include delivery of targeted English and mathematics support interventions to students in either whole or small groups as directed by their general education teachers. Some individual (one-on-one) intervention occurs after school under the direction and guidance of school administration. Students work on English and math curricula with an emphasis on skills that meet both class requirements and individualized education plan (IEP) goals. Literacy, both English and financial, is a major emphasis in my classroom.

Many of my students are standard English learners who need a little extra support to be successful in a journey through to high school and beyond.

My Project

Our school is again fully open to students in uncertain times. Months ago, I thought we would begin the 2021-22 school year with assurances of low COVID transmission rates, high vaccination rates, and health security on campus. Today, unfortunately, this is not the case for students 11 and under and those who attend school with them.

The Delta variant of COVID-19 adds a degree of unpredictability to campus health.

School will now be near capacity with fewer regulations (classroom caps, student cohorts, distancing) than last spring. Only the highest quality personal protective equipment (PPE) keeps our classrooms and school community safe.

This project aims to give students choices in high quality PPE.
