My Students

This kindergarten class is full of energetic, excited young learners. We use a variety of methods to enhance our learning, including youtube videos, computers, and singing and dancing.

We love learning, and we love books!

We are a diverse group, in ethnicity, social-economic backgrounds, and learning styles. Some have a rich literacy background, and for others, this is our first immersion into the joy of books. Our school is part of a large city district. This is an all-day kindergarten, with a strong emphasis on both fiction and non-fiction books.

My Project

Listening to fluent reading is a crucial way to develop student comprehension and personal reading fluency. Using individual cd players will allow 5 students at a time to focus on listening to quality children's literature while increasing their independence. Being able to listen independently and follow along with the text gives students some much-needed work-alone time. Hearing the rise and fall of fluent reading, hearing character voices, hearing expressive language--these are all critical cues for the emerging reader. Giving the kids the ability to select favorite texts to listen to again and again increases their enjoyment of reading and their independence.

My students need independent learning activities to supplement the small group and large group formats used throughout our day.

Having frequent access to an individual CD player will increase their focus and sense of independence. Immersing their senses and their imagination in listening to classic books with characterizations and sound effects will enhance their reading ability, their enjoyment of school, and their love of books. And there's no stopping a kid who loves to read!
