This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Hello friends, I am an elementary school speech language therapist in the most overcrowded community school district in New York City. All of the students I service have speech and/or language difficulties.

My students are curious minds, creative artists, playful friends, they take turns playing games with their peers, learn to make sounds, create new words and sentences, imagine real and make-believe stories, answer and ask a lot of different questions, they love to listen to and read books, and they love to learn.

My students are all sweet, motivated and very funny kindergarten-third grade students with a range of learning disabilities including ADHD, Intellectual Disability, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Auditory Processing Disorder, and Speech and Language Delay. They work extremely hard to overcome their challenges and are the most resilient little people you will ever meet. They need additional outlets and specific materials for learning, to keep their attention to task, reinforce their behaviors positively, engage them, and expand their skills.

My Project

These games will enhance students' knowledge of vocabulary, basic concepts, parts of speech, figurative language, and much, much more! The various materials, like the jumbo mouth puppet and throat scope, will provide students with the appropriate visual to help them produce sounds, feel more confident and enjoy doing it in the process.

With your help, students will not feel like therapy is work, and the challenging techniques and lessons being presented to them will feel like a fun game!

I need your help to build my toolbox. As an SLP in a low-income school, it is often challenging to find target specific resources and tools to support therapy. Often the educational materials are not specialized for speech or language needs or do not shine a specific focus on social language, Autism, or Apraxia of speech. These resources are evidence-based and are created and tested by speech and language therapists.

My students would greatly benefit from these materials to help them successfully navigate their already uphill battle. With your continued help, I know they will succeed!
