My Students

Our students love to read because WE love to read. We strive to read books that are new and popular with kids. Our favorite moments are when a student stops us in the hall or on the playground to describe an exciting moment in a book they know we have read. Getting newly released books into the hands of our students is a top priority. However, over half of our student population comes from low-income households, and they are not always able to afford new reading materials.

Our students love to crack open new books.

They love reading, and reading for enjoyment is a huge component of our school’s reading culture. I dedicate 30 minutes a day of uninterrupted reading time, a time when students can relax in a comfy spot with a pillow or curl up in a chair and enjoy reading anything that interests them. This time is one of our students' favorite times. Our goal is to sustain our students' love of reading through new and exciting materials we can share together.

My Project

A love of reading is the best gift I can give my students. So why not start with the 15 Sunshine State Young Reader Award (SSYRA) books. Students who read these books not only have a chance to try out for the Battle of the Books team for our school, but they also earn brag tags and class prizes. More importantly they are working toward their overall reading goals for the year, to read One Million words. I am always looking for ways to get these books into the hands of as many students as possible. In order to make this wish happen, I need multiple copies of each of the SSYRA books.

Getting these new books into the hands of students who do not have financial means to purchase them is the key to them becoming better readers while supporting our school reading program.

Students will be able to take these books home to read and share with their families. From book tastings, to presentations, to lunch bunches, to book talks, putting the books into the hands of the students will allow all students to experience these wonderful titles!
