My Students

Each year, 15 books are selected for the Sunshine State Young Readers Awards (SSYRA) program. In our school, students in 3rd, 4th and 5th grades have the opportunity to participate in a district wide reading competition called "Battle of the Books" in which students must match book titles to quotes from the text. I am the coach of the team, and last year we brought the first place trophy back to our school! We need to defend our title this year! In order to remain the Battle of the books champions, we need multiple copies of the SSYRA books.

This project will provide access to my students and other students on the Battle of the Books team to the newly released 2020-2021 Sunshine State Young Readers Award book list!

I would love three copies of each of the 2020-2021 SSYRA titles. I will introduce the titles to the students and staff through a "book tasting" and do read alouds in class. These books will be enjoyed by our students throughout the entire school year. They will also help our Battle of the Books team keep our status of being Number One!

My Project

Reading is one of the most important skills a person can learn. I believe the key to reading success is finding books that interest a person. My classroom library is filled with a variety of books. The students are allowed to check those books out and take them home to read. It is very costly and difficult to continually add to my library. That is why this project is so important. It not only supports reading in the classroom and home, but it is also a way for my students to come together and represent our school in a reading competition.

Getting these new books into the hands of students who do not have financial means to purchase them is the key to them becoming better readers while supporting our school reading program.

Students will be able to take these books home to read and share with their families. From book tastings, to presentations, to book talks, putting the books into the hands of the students will allow all students to experience these wonderful titles.
