My Students

Keep us engaged in learning! For many of us this is our first opportunity to learn letter names, letter sounds and numbers! Help us do it in an exciting way by getting messy in sand and water with our kindergarten friends!

My kindergarteners come from a diverse background with a wide range of learning experiences before reaching kindergarten.

Some come with a great foundation, many come with very little and are already at a disadvantage from the get-go. Some are native Hawaiians, others have made Hawaii their new home. Their home is a close-knit community with high hopes of making our school one of the best public learning places, despite the many challenges that Hawaii Public Schools face. Most of all, my kindergarteners love to be active! They will feel right at home learning new things through sand and water play just like the environment they grew up in, the sand and the surf!

My Project

With these materials, my students will be able to dig through sand to hunt for letters and numbers to build number recognition and letter name recognition while developing gross motors skills. They will be able to "go fishing" for letters and numbers in water while building fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They can work together with their peers to help name the numbers, letter names or letter sounds of the sand shells and fish they are hunting up. Learning through play promotes social skill development and is hugely effective in retaining new concepts! This water and sand table has huge possibilities beyond the extra materials I've requested, like the letter fishing poles, but these materials will give us a great start!

Kindergarteners need to play!

They need chances to learn to share and play fairly with friends. They need chances to build fine and gross motor skills. They need opportunities to build solid letter and numeral knowledge from the very beginning so they can be successful in school and life. These materials provide another avenue to do all of these things. They will be well used and loved, as I'm sure they will become the favorite center in our classroom!
