This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

2020 has allowed for the strength, resilience, and empathy of my students to shine especially bright. The majority of my students are from lower socioeconomic status households, many raised by a single parent or grandparent, and have been disproportionately affected by COVID-19. Although some of them struggle to find a way to school or a way to pay for supplies, they leap at the opportunity to help me or give to me. Their hope astounds me and their kindness and curiosity keeps me going. I wish to give them the world in return for all that they have taught me.

My Project

Before my students leave me for summer break, I want to ensure EVERY one of them has books to read at home. This project will send 2-3 memorable books into the backpacks of my amazingly kind and resilient kindergartners. Each book is $3-3.75 so each donation of that amount or more buys a book!

95.7% of students at my school are considered economically disadvantaged.

According to Neuman and Dickinson (2006), "In middle-income neighborhoods the ratio of books per child is 13 to 1, in low-income neighborhoods, the ratio is 1 age-appropriate book for every 300 children." Books shouldn't be a privilege for my five year olds! If you're able, please consider brightening my students' summers with literature they can learn from and enjoy.
