Help Ms. Ofstie

I teach high school English Language Learners at a high-need public high school in Southern California. My students are a mix of 9th-12th graders, and they come from many different countries, such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma, Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. They are level 2 English Language Learners, which means that they are at the high beginner / low intermediate level.

I am lucky enough to be able to teach summer school to these wonderful students. Unfortunately, the district just informed us that while there is money to have summer school, there is no money to purchase books. Other teachers have suggested using the same textbooks that I used during the school year, but I don't think that repeating the same content is an effective way to improve my students' English. I would love to have some new books that are strictly for summer school that will allow my students' levels to improve and get them ready for level 3.

In order to do this, I need 20 copies of a textbook called "Snapshots: Literature for Young Adults." It is an anthology of contemporary young adult literature that contains many different genres that deal with contemporary issues. It will prepare them for high school and beyond in college by teaching them critical reading and thinking skills, as well as active reading strategies.

Your generous donation will ensure that my students don't have a boring, repetitive summer school experience, but instead will be exposed to exciting, new literature. You will make it possible for us to have a useful, effective summer program that will improve my students' reading skills tremendously and prepare them for college. Thank you very much!
