Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I work in a NYC public school in the South Bronx, and I teach 9th grade ELA. My school community has been hit very hard by the pandemic. Many of my students did not have technology nor access to the internet, and when they were finally given access to both, it was the end of May. However, my students have persevered and tried their hardest to make things work.

Many of my students are learning English as their second or third language.

My students are hard working, love learning, and are trying to become fluent in academic content and conversational English. And since we have been online and unable to see each other every day, we know the progress they have made has been delayed or stunted.

My Project

We know that the summer often equates to a break from academic learning. And with this summer coming up, after being out of the traditional school setting since the middle of March, and many, if not all summer programs being cut, I want to give my students the opportunity to keep up their critical thinking skills.

This summer, my coteacher and I are hosting an optional book club for students to continue reading, discussing, and checking in with their school community.

Individual copies of The Poet X will be sent to our students as our first text. We hope to give students not only an academic experience, but a way to keep in touch while the summer in NYC is still up in the air with reopening.
