My students do not often get opportunities during the summer. Last year there was a Summer School enrichment program available, but due to a lack of funding, my middle school gets do not have the opportunity this year.
My students are very smart, and very interested in bettering themselves through education despite the lack of opportunities they are offered.
They have greatly enjoyed reading books with me throughout the year and want the chance to expand their reading horizons over summer break.
My Project
With summer school not being an option this year, my students were looking ahead at a summer full of nothing. These kids can't afford to go to summer camps, and rarely can their families afford vacation. With this in mind, a couple of my students approached me to ask about hosting a free Summer Book Club that would meet twice a week all summer long.
After talking to my principal to try to figure out how it could be done, she offered to allow me to host the club at the school and then the planning began.
Meeting with the interested students led to them being unable to choose only two books, so we are planning on trying to get through three! Having a couple copies of each of the sequels will also give my students the chance to continue reading even after Book Club stops meeting.
