My Students

The building I teach in is the most ethnically diverse in our large district. The student body is surprisingly represented by children from over 15 different countries from all over the world! However, the majority of the student body is African-American (52%) and White (36%).

My previous experience with Donors Choose was exceptional.

Students were thrilled to be introduced to a new young-adult fiction novel, and participation and class morale was higher than ever. I'm hoping to achieve the same results with this project.

My students are faced with the daunting task of reading, analyzing, and writing informational texts. Many of the examples and works that we currently use to teach these skills are dated and unrelatable to my students. This project will help teach these valuable skills while engaging students in material they will be interested in.Studies show that reading informational text allows students to develop sophisticated comprehension skills, build critical content knowledge and vocabulary, and apply higher-order thinking skills.

My Project

From sugar’s first cultivation over 10,000 years ago, to the slaves brought to the New World to work in sugar plantations, to Gandhi’s struggle for human rights, this fascinating book tells the tale of the birth of the modern world through an exploration of the history of sugar.

Students' minds will be blown when they learn the unique, unusual, and unprecedented ways that the world's love of sugar has changed our globe and its people.

The graphics and pictures are bound to captivate students' interest.

This novel will give students countless opportunities to practice the skills and obtain worldly knowledge that will help them succeed on their mandatory standardized tests.
