My Students

I teach middle school students with Autism. Autism spectrum disorder is characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. Sensory seating refers to types of places to sit and work that provides sensory input to each learner. Standard chairs aren't always the best choices for learners who need to wiggle while they work!

My students are special in a variety of ways.

Each child has strengths in different areas and our goal is to create an environment where all needs can be met. The au-some students in my classroom have sensory needs that can interfere with their ability to concentrate, communicate, and excel. To support these needs, I want to incorporate a variety of sensory seating to make learning easier for my teens!

My Project

In my classroom, we used evidence-based strategies to support teens with Autism Spectrum Disorder. We spend our day moving around our classroom and working in small groups so that each student is receiving exactly what they need. My goal is to have a different types of seating at each location to increase engagement. This project includes stools for direct instruction center!

Sensory wobble stools provide gentle movement for a calming effect, that is ideal for individuals with Autism.

This type of seating enhances focus and attention for fidgety or active individuals at in our classroom. I encourage students to wobble, stand, wiggle, or jump while they work because everyone learns in their own special way!
