Many of us take our enjoyment of reading for granted. But, the reality is the average student in my classroom does not enjoy reading. If asked, most of my students will say they hate reading. I work in a large title 1 school, where a significant percentage of students live in poverty. Most living in generational poverty, meaning their family has lived in poverty for more than two generations. Before my students are even born, they are already so far behind. One place my students lack is in basic reading skills. This is most prevalently shown in their hatred of reading. With their hatred of reading comes reading scores averaging two years below grade level. Their hatred of reading and low reading scores are direct results of generational poverty. Few adults in their lives actually own books, and an even sadder number of adults they interact with can read. One way I’ve tried to combat these societal disadvantages is by starting an independent reading program. In the independent reading program, students are given something they have never had before – time set aside for reading in a safe quiet place. Research has shown a positive correlation between the extent a student reads and ability. As my students become stronger readers, they begin to enjoy reading more. When they enjoy reading, they become better readers. Last school year the average student in my classroom advanced one year in ability, with some advancing as many as four years. In order to be ready for college, my students need to be continually working on their reading skills and comprehension. Continually working to close the undeserving gaps of generational poverty. I provide for the safe quiet environment to read, but providing students with books is where you can help. Right now my classroom library has about 60 books. I am expecting to have about 80 students next year. Eighty students reading six books each means my library should have over 200 books. Without a considerable amount of new books, my independent reading program will die. This is very upsetting to me. The death of the program does not upset me. I’m upset by my students having to continue to suffer from the consequences of generational poverty.
