My Students

I teach fourth and fifth grade Title I reading in one of the best rural schools in Oklahoma. My students are a diverse group with varied levels of learning that are pulled out daily to learn new reading skills in our reading intervention lab. Our classroom is a space where students enjoy coming to learn. We are a Title I school with the majority of our students receiving free lunch.

Many of my students do not have home internet access and are struggling with keeping invested in their distance learning programs.

They love to read, and many have requested assistance to help them stay on top of their skills during this time at home. Although we cannot meet in person, the next best thing will be for me to provide them engaging opportunities to use at home now and throughout the summer.

My students have curiosity, creativity, compassion, and positive attitudes. They are truly amazing people. Together, we will make the most out of this situation and continue to make learning fun!

My Project

I am a Reading Specialist who works with small groups of students in an elementary school. We work on building reading skills, grammar and spelling skills. With the proper supplies and right intervention, students can move up several reading levels in a few months.

The students I work with need extra help in decoding and encoding due to reading deficits.

Several of these students have been diagnosed with the learning disability dyslexia and need to work on building their reading, spelling, and writing skills.

Due to distance learning with the closing of schools, many of my students that had already struggled in reading are now even farther behind. We will use these books, lessons and word lists in our virtual learning over the next few months to help bridge the gap.

The supplies requested include dyslexia activity books to read and work through with the students. With the book Fluency Word Lists: An Orton-Gilligham Reading Resource for Dyslexia, students will learn and master short vowels, complex vowel teams, 2-syllable words and words with prefixes and suffixes. We will also use the book Blast Off to Reading!: 50 Orton-Gillingham Based Lessons for Struggling Readers and Those with Dyslexia, which is a complete, structured literacy reading program with online tools & games! This workbook provides a password for the distance learning app that goes along with the book. We will also use the When Mosquitoes Buzz in People's Ears book in our Cause and Effect project.

These dyslexia students are in a low income district and they need help with getting resources. We need to do everything we can to keep these students motivated and continuing on their road to success as lifelong readers!
