My Students

My students are from a low income community in rural Oregon. In our community,​ there are not many opportunities for local employment. The goal of improving our program is to provide equipment and experience that will allow our students to graduate from our program with marketable industry skills.

Many of our students will be on an alternative track from college and are seeking options like trade schools, apprenticeships, and vocational training.

Due to my extensive experience in CNC manufacturing, and nursery work I am uniquely blessed to provide guidance and training for these students.

My Project

In our shop space measuring skills are a key to successful work. Tape measures and rulers are great when working with wood, but are inadequate when it comes to metal working. As we begin to do more complex metal working we need the higher level of precision that micrometers can provide.

Students will learn to use the micrometers to complete measuring tasks with a precision level equivalent to one third of a hair width.

It is also not a surprise that the first object I have them measure is a strand of their very own hair. As their skills grow, they will complete more advanced measurements and calculations from figuring tolerances for diameters of valves in combustion engines to finding the minimum and maximum diameter of metal stock for cutting threads.
