My Project

As a speech language pathologist, I am a firm believer in a multi-sensory approach to teaching speech and language skills. In my classroom, I see most of 50+ children twice weekly to target their speech/language goals. I love a good theme, therefore, each week, I choose a theme to center all of the therapy activities around. On the student's first visit to me for the week, we read a book related to the theme and complete an activity targeting their specific goals. On their second visit, I incorporate a craft, sensory activity, or game that not only is on theme, but also works to target those individualized goals.

Through storybooks, children are able to see through the eyes of others and connect to emotions that they cannot grasp on their own.

It is of upmost importance to teach children at an early age how to handle their emotions so that they can be successful, productive adults. Currently, I bring my personal books from home to school; however, I would love to have a classroom library, with flexible seating, for students to be able to revisit a story they loved or go back to a book that helps them regulate a certain emotion. Flexible seating helps my wiggliest children stay engaged and comfortable while learning and also provides a space for independent learning as well. A classroom library with flexible seating will continue to enrich the sensory friendly, safe space I strive to create for my students.
