As a second-year teacher in District 75, New York City's special education district for students with severe disabilities, I am fortunate enough to be working with the same group of third-fifth grade students I worked with last year. Over the course of a year I was able to increase some of my students' literacy levels up to a grade and a half. This year, with more experience and training, I am determined to advance their skills even more. Though working with students with autism means that some of my students do not read in a traditional way, it is important that all of my students have the same opportunities to handle and enjoy books. Board books (sturdy books made of cardboard) would expand my classroom library to allow students a chance to handle books independently so that they learn how to turn pages without inadvertent rips or tears. With a small selection of board books on hand, hopefully I can work all of my students up to more conventional paper books so that they may independently peruse whatever they get their hands on.
