My Students

These students are full of life and have a desire for learning. I have never met students with more personality or tenacity. This school community has really changed my perspective on life in such a wonderful way. I have found joy in the little things because I have seen how they have joy in the little things despite some of their lifestyles. They are really a special group of students.

This group of children has really impressed upon my heart the need for family and a community that rallies behind them.

It has been so wonderful to see the support throughout the year, but it never seems like enough. I have seen children come to school with shoes three sizes too small because their parents can't afford new shoes. I have known children to go hungry over a weekend because their parents can barely afford to put food on the table. While the school staff, including me, has tried to meet the needs of these children, they are still in need of so much more!

My Project

School is a place that fosters learning and grows social skills, but truly a successful school addresses the needs of the whole child. The students who will benefit from this project are students with counseling needs, who are experiencing homelessness, or transience. These students are struggling with the most basic needs and we want to help students in a tangible way. Students with severe emotional or financial distress in the home are often seen in school as the "problem child."

We are rewriting the "problem child" narrative in our school population and want to begin implementing strategies to support our students with social emotional needs.

Providing students with the chance to care for something that belongs to them is a research based strategy that supports students in managing emotions and learning social skills. The power of this strategy relies on the student taking ownership and finding healing through the care of something they love. Also, we want to provide a care item for student who might need it over the long winter break.
