Stuff Our Shelves!

My students need engaging, nonfiction reading material that is academically and age appropriate. It is difficult to find first and second grade material that is suitable for teenagers to work with.

My Students

Our classroom is part of a large building dedicated to serving students with severe disabilities from ages 5 to 21. This year, our group consists of 6 non-verbal or minimally verbal teenagers who are academically functioning around a first grade level. All students use an iPad as a communication device.

I believe in exposing my students to as many topics and ideas as possible, regardless of disability or academic level.

Presenting new subjects in an enjoyable, intriguing way leads to student interest. Their interest keeps them engaged and their engagement results in learning.

"Kids have to be exposed to different things in order to develop. A child's not going to find out he likes to play a musical instrument if you never exposed him to it..."

~Dr. Temple Grandin

My Project

I would like for my classroom to include a variety of educational and multi sensory materials for students to explore. Classroom sets of books are important, so that students can read as a group and model for each other appropriate reading. It is also easier for a student to see the words and pictures on a page when they have their own copy of the book.

My goal is to improve my students' reading and communication skills by providing them with engaging reading material that is appropriate for their academic level and age.

These books would make a huge difference in our classroom! Thank you for visiting our site and taking the time to get to know us!
