My Students

Racial tensions among high school youth in our city have escalated to violence. Now, more than ever, our city's public school students need to experience other cultures and learn the value of collaborating to create a better, safer, and more sustainable world.

My students are seven wonderful future leaders with a desire to learn how to make our world more sustainable.

They are not your typical high schoolers, they have chosen to work and study during their spring break because they want to learn what Dominicans are doing to make their communities more sustainable. They are young but have already caught on to the idea that they have the power to create positive change. For all seven students, this will be their first international service experience. We are a small public school in the heart of a major city. The seven students participating in this program range from 15-17 years old. They are not all straight A students. None of them have perfect attendance. And none of them are strangers to the Principal's office. However, what they all are, are young adults with a desire to be global citizens and to experience what it is like to live in a community vastly different that their own.

My Project

We want every student of all socioeconomic backgrounds to participate in transformative learning and service experiences like this. Therefore, we offered the trip on a sliding scale, meaning each family paid the most they could afford. Only one of the seven students could pay for the trip in full. We have been working tirelessly to fundraise the rest (candy grams, bake sales, raffles, bike-a-thon). We hope that there are others who share the same vision that no student should be denied opportunities like this because of a lack of funds. Therefore, we are asking for support from DonorsChoose.org donors to cover some of the program costs.

I remember one of my graduate school professors telling us that the purpose of education is NOT knowledge; in fact, the purpose of education is action.

If we want a safer, cleaner, more peaceful world, we have to provide our future leaders with the tools and experiences to turn their learning into action. This program will instill in my students the spirit of collaboration, a passion for learning, and be a vehicle for understanding their role in the global community. We hope that others agree.
