Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach high school students in an urban setting, less than 2 miles from Downtown Los Angeles. My students are primarily first and second-generation scholars who have an impressive drive to succeed. I teach in a school where they are encouraged and expected to attend college, and as such, teaching students collaboration skills and literacy skills is just as important as teaching content and study skills. For many of my students, they will be the first in their family to graduate high school. Over 98% of our student population is part of the free and reduced lunch program.

My students are strong-willed, persevering and have a desire to succeed, but unfortunately, due to their family's socioeconomic status, they do not have the same access to materials as most high schoolers.

That is primarily why we focus on teaching 21st-Century skills at school, and why funding this project is imperative for their success.

My Project

Many of the wonderful scholars at our school have the motivation and drive to make it to college and succeed. Scoring high on Advanced Placement exams is hard enough, but for many of our scholars, it can be a daunting task because they have not practiced the necessary study skills to do their best on the test.

This is where our Study Binders come in– it is an essential resource for students to study from, and it teaches them valuable lessons in responsibility, self-discipline, and organization.

Making study binders and keeping them updated all year round is a college-ready skill in it of itself. However, we are missing a key ingredient in our not-so-secret formula: a printer with ink. Unfortunately, resources are short when it comes to printing out materials, and although we use paper-less resources when we can, many of our students do not have access to technology at home, and therefore, the classic paper resources work best to ensure equity across our population. We also need a paper trimmer so that we can make half-sheet resources and literally cut down on our paper use. The final thing on our list? Some classroom staples- Lysol wipes and hand sanitizers to keep the flu bugs away, and a new sharpener to replace our recently deceased workhorse pencil sharpener, who died after 5 loyal years of service.

Thank you for giving our scholars the best chance for success!
