Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our kids share a desire to express themselves and project their identity to their peers and the school. Overwhelmed by media, advertisements, and consumerism on their daily commute, all have an effect on the vision of who they are now and the dream of who they hope to become in the future.

Our kids are born and raised New Yorkers, loaded with energy and a need to express themselves in this tech-savvy world.

They often come from low-income families or single moms or dads who work two jobs. They could live with grandma or grandpa, as well as those that live in foster homes. Some of our students commute more than an hour and a half each way to school and transfer from bus to train. Our school is one of six schools housed in the Martin Luther King, Jr. building behind Lincoln Center on the upper west side of Manhattan. Students are vibrant, connect with one another, are respectful to their peers and by their senior year, many have built close bonds as well as becoming a united group. By donating funds and purchasing a digital SLR camera, our students will be able to continue the tradition we started eleven years ago. As a teacher, I will be able to teach the students how to photograph each other. I currently photograph them myself using my own digital camera.

My Project

For the past decade, I have taken black and white studio "personality" portraits of the seniors to be used as display on the walls of the school and in the senior yearbook. The students look forward to this project every year and I am bombarded with requests. Students will be begging and pleading to be photographed so they can have a non-traditional picture of themselves for their family or be one of the photos hanging in the hallway of the school. The photographs offer the students a chance to express themselves in an appropriate manner without the school uniform. It is a way of sharing their individual uniqueness with their classmates, as well as a rare opportunity to own a photo of themselves that would normally be too costly. It is a tradition in the school that the students look forward to their senior year. With the donation of a digital SLR camera, we will be able to continue this tradition. As a teacher, I will finally have the opportunity to teach students how to become a photographer.

A few years back, a student tagged our studio lighting methods as "ghetto".

Since then, we have used this expression to lighten the mood and laugh at how we somehow achieve professional quality photographs using a digital point and shoot camera, an overhead projector to light the background, and a student holding a hardware store metal reflector light for the subject. I move their arm around to 'adjust the light'. This person is called our gaffer. We look forward to making the portraits.
