My Students

Do you remember what it was like to first learn about the history of the United States? My students are investigating the history of our country and making meaning of all of the phrases and events that they have heard of but do not understand.

My students are fifth graders who live in a rural area and love learning about real events and people.

So far this year we have read The Man Who Walked Between the Towers (a true story of a man who walked across a tight rope between the world trade center towers when they were constructed). I paired this read aloud with a lesson about September 11th. Fifth graders today were not alive when September 11th happened and found the event extremely fascinating. I want my students to learn about more events that have taken place throughout our nation's history and think about each event from multiple points of view. Resources from this project will be shared among the fifth grade team at my school to promote student engagement with social studies texts.

My Project

Studies Weekly resources arrive each week in the format of a newspaper increasing student interest. Each week the focus of each publication shifts to a particular event or person, aligned with our social studies curriculum. Students will be able to not only practice their reading skills, but also learn about history. With a class set of these articles the possibilities are endless for how students may collaborate and work together on reading these newspapers. Students could work individually, in pairs, or in teams. Students could also jigsaw different issues of the publication that focus on the same time period to build an understanding of multiple events and people in a particular time period. This resource would provide much needed texts that align with social studies curriculum and instruction.

With social studies being the only non-tested (standardized that is) core subject in the fifth grade in North Carolina, resources are extremely limited.

When I look through the social studies text book that my students have access to, it has names of peers who I graduated high school with. It's been over ten years since I was in fifth grade, these books are outdated! Even if the books were more up to date, there is an extreme amount of bias that affects the content presented in textbooks.
