This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach a Functional Life Skills classroom. The students in my classroom range from age 5-9 years old, Kindergarten through third grade. My students are my babies and they are amazing!!

My students all have disabilities and those disabilities range from high-functioning Autism to low-functioning Autism, Down Syndrome, Intellectual Disabilities, and Cerebral Palsy.

They all have severe behavior, communication, and academic needs. In fact, my classroom is considered to be one of the most difficult classes within my school district in terms of behavior challenges.

Most of my students are non-verbal and benefit from the use of technology in the classroom either to communicate or to learn basic academic and social skills.

My Project

All of the students in my classroom have some sort of intellectual disability: some are diagnosed on the Autism Spectrum, some are diagnosed on the Down Syndrome Spectrum. There are a number of evidence-based technology applications that will help my students succeed in the classroom and keep up with their same-age typically developing peers. I would like to use the requested iPads to start using a voice output system to help my non-verbal students communicate with peers and teachers. I would like to get a typing program that can easily be used on an iPad to help students who have limited fine motor skills to write with a typical writing utensil. Every student in general education classroom has their own tablet to work with, so why can't my students have the same access to technology as the same-age, typically developing peers? Especially if it will help them learn.
