it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My students who are hard of hearing require engagement and access to technology to enhance their learning. As an itinerant Teacher for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, I teach students from Kindergarten to 12th grade. Given the wide range of learning levels, it is my role to create engaging and visually stimulating lessons and activities that will target each student's specific need. Each year, I have been incorporating more technology use into my lessons and even more so this school year. When I pick my student up from their particular class, I provide them with academic support to target any gaps in their understanding of the material that was previously taught by their classroom teacher. Let's say he or she may have just learned about Ancient Civilizations. Now, during our session we have just sparked a conversation about the geography or perhaps about how ancient civilization structures were built. Using the IPAD, I can provide a visual resource to navigate where those civilizations once were located on the map and compare it to where my student lives now. As students who are hard of hearing, they require visuals to help them imagine and fully understand content. Due to their hearing loss, often times our students who are hard of hearing do not have the language exposure or the background knowledge compared to typical students who are hearing. Giving them access to academic content presented in a visually stimulating way engages my students, therefore sparking their curiosity to learn, to ask questions, to dive deeper in their understanding of the world and how it functions. I am proud of each one of my students - we have built a connection where they have the safe space to ask questions and know that our individual time is dedicated to them.
