This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students are diligent, hardworking, and deeply motivated to succeed academically. However, no matter how dedicated my students are, they cannot do it alone. Students only have the tools and resources their school and their teacher can provide them with. They have the basics they need to learn in my science classes, but there's a whole world of different technologies out there which I know would so enrich their learning experiences. My students yearn for more than just textbooks and worksheets.
My students deserve a chance to interact with their science lessons in the most vibrant, comprehensive, and technologically-modern way possible.
They crave a Science Classroom filled with resources, adventure, and exploration!
My Project
In my classroom, I try to avoid teacher-delivered instruction as much as possible. I conduct experiments with my students, I give them access to technology platforms that break down different topics, and I assign them different activities to help them discover new ideas. However, there are always concepts that I have to teach outright or misconceptions which I must also address myself. Sometimes, though, especially with students who don’t respond well to lecture-based instruction, a teacher’s explanation just isn’t enough. That’s where this project comes in.
When learning new material, classes will be subdivided into student groups, where each team is responsible for creating a poster or graphic explaining a subset of the new topic.
Each group will then print their poster / graphic on our Canon Image poster-maker, and present to other groups in the class. In this way, not only will students be taught material by me as a teacher, but they will also get to teach and learn from one another! This method of instruction will preserve the process of discovery as students will have to research different topics, but will also encourage student creativity and teamwork as they work collaboratively to present what they’ve learned to their peers.
