My students have learning disabilities which includes students with auditory and visual disabilities to students with autism. Many are ESL students entering our school from numerous countries around the world.
My students in this picture just finished getting their stories published.
This is a picture of a collaboration between my six graders and the class of intellectually disabled students next door.
I want to now include all my students 6th, 7th and 8th graders in a publishing project which I feel will not only help them write better but will help them feel welcomed in our school and our country.
My Project
Our students will explore the struggles and success of various people that have come to America looking for a new beginning by reading scholastic magazine articles and books on immigration as well as scholastic video resources online.
Every child having their own copy of scholastic magazine will help them see how to write their own special American story as they read those written by various authors.
Our students will share their own stories about themselves and their families as many of our students come to our school from all over the world.
Students will then work together to write a book collaborating their stories which we will submit for publishing. Those that were born in America will share their stories with those that have come to our school from other countries. I feel this project will not only help students read and write better, but they will also see the contributions each have contributed to our society and feel safe learning that their stories is the same as many others who have come to America.
