My Students

As a teacher it is hard to fit life lessons into our curriculum. We are so busy teaching the core subjects so our students do well on their standardized testing. Although I think it is very important to teach students life lessons, they are sometimes forgotten due to time constraints. To ensure the students are exposed to some of these very important lessons I want to expose them to these things during our literature circles. We read books in small groups and then discuss the books. It would be great to make these books about subjects that are very important to our students.

One of these subjects is bullying.

Every student at some point in their lives is exposed to bullying. Sometimes they are the one doing the bullying, sometimes they are bullied, and sometimes they just witness bullying occurring. They need to recognize this behavior as very hurtful even if they are not the one being bullied. They need to learn what to do if they witness or take part in this behavior. They need to understand the lifelong consequences that may occur to someone who is bullied.

My Project

As a teacher I am not, nor is my school, graded on how well we teach life skills. We are graded on how well the students know their core subjects. It is not required for me to teach students about bullying. In some situations bullying has caused physical harm and even death.

I think bullying needs to be included in my curriculum.

One way to do this is by including it in another subject. I currently have student split into reading groups and read for thirty minutes a day. If I can get the books I have written in this grant I will be able to read during this time about the very important subject of bullying. After reading the book the students are allowed discussion time. We will discuss these books as well as the subject of bullying. These books would give me the opportunity to teach reading and bullying at the same time.
