My Students

I am beyond grateful to be in a profession that lets me work with kind, creative, hilarious and endearingly hopeful children who love to learn. I mostly teach ESL learners who do not hear the English language beyond the four walls of our school. Their parents do not have the English language skills to ask them questions about their learning or reinforce lessons learned in school. In addition to English Language Learners, I also teach students with special needs in my classroom.

The students in my classroom have a diverse range of interests and needs.

In order to truly differentiate my teaching, I try to incorporate student voice and choice, thus creating a more productive classroom. I teach at a Title One school, meaning that nearly all of my students live below the nation-wide poverty line. However, their situation has never stopped them from dreaming big!

My Project

All my students desire to be strong readers and giving them Scholastic News, Storyworks and Science Spin to read regularly will do just that! These engaging magazines will provide students with grade-level material as well as keep them updated about what's going on in the real world.

Students are more than eager to read their favorite section of the article as soon as the new issue comes out.

While some enthusiastically go straight to the nonfiction article, many enjoy reading the plays and debates.

The great thing about these magazines is that they give students access to their online resources, which provides them with opportunities to watch videos, practice vocabulary, play games and take quizzes. There are also tools for teachers to support students who read above or below the grade level by adapting the article. All in all, Scholastic News, Storyworks and Science Spin are wonderful resources needed to make our classroom thrive!
