My students need ropes, draws, harnesses, and belay devices to add rope safety and knot skills to our physical education curriculum. Every student could walk away a competent climber.

My Students

Our school is a cute k-12 situated between the idyllic Langell and Poe Valleys up against Bly Mountain. Despite the beauty of the surrounding area, as a measure of demography, 100% of the school receives free lunches due to the outstanding number who qualify every single year. Sometimes sports team participation, or even parent-teacher conference attendance, is limited because parents won't have the gas money to drive the rural distances to the school.

It is sad to see budding youth missing out on this great beauty around them, and the well-being that comes from being out in it, due to these conditions; I seek to change this in any way I can.

In my first years, I fundraised to install a 40' traverse wall for all students, helped instigate swim lessons for 3rd graders, worked to bring out a fleet of bicycles for 4-6th to learn bicycle skills, have personally subsidized high schoolers entry into the local climbing gym, and have taken groups of students up local mountains to learn hiking, backpacking, survival, orienteering, and endurance skills. It is my personal passion for these things that fuels the energy and experiences in my classroom.

My Project

Rock climbing provides an almost unparalleled opportunity to pass outdoors, safety, and fear management skills onto students, as well as physical problem solving to "solve" the climbing itself. I cannot emphasize how excited I am to propose this idea, let alone to teach it!

By bringing these harnesses, climbing ropes, belay devices, and quickdraws into the existing climbing environment at our school, students will have the opportunity to become proficient at all the technical, as well as the safety, skills of this wonderfully empowering form of outdoorsmanship!
