Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

Help us awaken the Quiixote in our Spanish students. I am a Spanish teacher in a New York Public High School. I teach Spanish as a foreign language to inner city students of all grades. I also teach Native language arts to Spanish native speakers and heritage speakers who constitute a minority of the school's population and are also English as a Second Language students. Our school does not have a Spanish Department. We are under the wing of the English department, which makes it difficult to request and obtain resources because we don't have a separate budget.

When I started teaching in my current school, I realized that Spanish students were taking courses that did not meet their needs. They were placed in a Spanish as a foreign language class, when they could speak it fluently. I decided then, that we needed to meet the needs of these Spanish students by offering classes that they could learn and benefit from. Students immediately showed interest and enthusiasm to the extent that they were willing to show up to school at 7:15 in the morning - earlier than any other class in the school. This has been going on for about two years. I have been teaching this class by photocopying texts of my personal collection, but it is far more empowering for them to have the actual experience of holding a book in their hands that is written in their native language. I want to encourage them to read outside of class for personal pleasure, or establish a book club within the class. However, theshortage of Spanish books in nearby libraries is extremely discouraging for them.

Studies show that students with a strong foundation in their native language are more likely to be successful in learning a second language. Since many of our students are English language learners, a proper and well equipped Spanish classroom with a solid library will benefit the students greatly. Having a classroom library with a variety of books will definitely ease the path towards reading independently since books would be within their reach, and their reading options will be broadened. This will further motivate them to become active readers. It expands their vocabulary, critical thinking skills and helps improve their writing. In addition, reading books by Spanish authors creates awareness and pride in the achievements of great Spanish people like themselves, helping them to visualize themselves as potential Spanish writers or simply as achievers.

You can make a difference for these Spanish students who are so eager to learn about their heritage but lack the resources. In a country that has promised them and their parents equal opportunity for success they are often left shortchanged. Your donation can ensure that these students get their part of the American dream and catapult their lives to higher levels of academic success.
