My Students

All students are diverse and energetic 5 and 6-year-olds in a southern Arizona Title I STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math) school.

Ninety-nine percent of our students qualify to receive free lunch.

Most are English Language Learners, including refugees from Africa, Asia, Mexico, and the Middle East. All coming from low-income households. School is often the first place my students are exposed to literacy, math, and STEAM activities in English. They come from homes where education is often not a priority, making the initial readiness gap wider. They strive to do their best against the odds and are always excited to come to school and learn.

My Project

The focus of this project is to provide differentiated materials for my students using laminating pouches, card rings and storage boxes. I'm also asking for a box of individual play dough for each student.

By donating to our project, it will allow me to print and laminate materials specific to each student's needs.

My phonics curriculum allows me to print out materials that I can laminate and put on a card ring. Students can work with a partner practicing their fluency and mastery of the alphabet, word families and sight words. These will be used in small groups, with a partner, at their seat and for testing.

My classroom is filled with sticky chart paper! I teach my students to read the room. We're beginning to work on word families, and I need chart paper to continue our classroom wallpaper. I use a circle chart and students help me come up with words & pictures that begin with a particular letter or word family. We review our work, and stick it on the wall for future use.

The laminating pouches will also be used to protect artwork for students' families.

The paper tubs will help keep my small groups organized with student materials.
