My Students
We need news! While the new core-curriculum demands attention to information based texts, my students do not have access to current event sources that engage their everyday sixth-grade experiences.
I work with a class of 26 students in an inclusive middle school classroom.
Eleven of my students have an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) to provide attentional services for a wide range of learning disabilities. In addition, to diverse learning abilities, my students come from various religious, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds. We are truly a rainbow of diversity.
My Project
News is all around us. However, finding news that accessible for a sixth grade student is near impossible. A subscription to "Junior Scholastic" would provide my students with the opportunity to have relevant news available to them all year.
This resource would also provide a valuable extension in our Social Studies curriculum. With increased attention to information based texts, we would use this resource to promote current events and support our analysis with facts from relevant articles.
