Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are as varied as the color of the rainbow, including their learning abilities. As the director of Special Education my students have a range of abilities and disabilities that impact the way they learn everyday. They are hard working students whose limitations are easy to accommodate with the right resources. All of my students are able to achieve and show growth even if they are not performing on their grade level. Traditional classroom environments, however, are not always conducive to their needs.

My Project

Many of my students are working with speech and language disorders, ADHD, and/or learning disabilities, and as a result they struggle with time and material management, organizations, and following classroom norms (i.e.; sitting upright facing forward in a rigid student desk.

I have found that small changes in the classroom can easily address specific needs that make a world of difference for students of all abilities.

Color coded paper and note cards help organize information, create a visual and chunk information. Additionally, many of my students struggle in traditional settings, seating for example is not always ideal. Students with emotional disturbances, and ADHD need different accommodations at times to help them focus and/or feel safe. Alternative seating is an excellent way to change the environment and thus in turn improve student achievement.
