Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My fifth grade students- and all the fifth graders that will benefit from your donation- are eager to increase their knowledge of the world and how it works. These fifth graders are always eager to engage in hands-on learning, conducting their own investigations and experiments. In fourth grade, they enjoyed creating scale models of the solar system, investigating the effects of gravity on different objects and discovering how laser lights interacted with various materials. This year, they are excited to learn about cells, genetics, microorganisms, matter, electricity, magnetism… there is a LOT of scientific discovery ahead of us this year!

Science investigations allow English language learners, and all learners for that matter, the chance to collaborate while exchanging ideas with classmates and interpreting their observations.

Our school is located in Gwinnett County, Georgia and it is a Title I school. The majority of my students qualify for free or reduced price lunch and they are a majority Latino population. Many of my own students, and students at the schools, are English language learners. Students developing a new or second language benefit greatly from hands-on experiences that give them the opportunity to apply verbal skills in real-world situations.

My Project

The equipment that I have selected will help my students conduct scientific investigations during various units of study. The cell unit specifically requires students to understand the need for microscopes in order to observe the building blocks of life. The unit also expects students to identify differences between plant and animal cells. An additional unit of study will have students investigate the effects of microorganisms. Microscopes will allow students to observe a variety of microorganisms. Additionally- they would be able to conduct a real-world investigation to collect and observe microorganisms living in our very own school! These materials are key to ensuring my students achieve the curriculum standards required of them and engage in actual hands-on experience practicing elements of the scientific method.
