Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The students I work with are Kindergarten-5th grade English Language Learners, many without any prior exposure to English, or K-2 students already significantly behind their peers. I am the only ESL teacher at my school, so I teach students in small groups at similar levels or grades in a separate location to target skills to improve their English language development.

The room I use lacks appropriate seating for my younger K-2 students.

The table's and chair's height is more suitable for older elementary students. Purchasing cushions will let children sit comfortably on the floor when they work with me, and the use of binders for leaning on while writing.

The portable easel is to model handwriting, label pictures with words, display chart paper for shared writing, teach children how to plan an essay (my more advanced ESL students). Students need to see what I am talking about; and I can easily write sight words down, show how to blend sounds together, or model any task first. The laminating machine will help sustain the materials I print out for students to work in centers/partnerships etc.by sorting games, building sentences, or creating rhyming puzzles. I can laminate handwriting practice sheets and activities for literacy centers. A variety of curriculum supports are available on Teachers Pay Teachers, including Orton Gillingham /Science of Reading Bundles on decoding with +300 pages of phonics and phonemic awareness. They also have materials to support reading comprehension and to personalize instruction at each student's level, and creative strategies for teaching a concept/skill. This is why the gift card would be extremely beneficial. TPT has creative scaffolds and graphic organizers.

Other materials I included are three sets of beginning reading books, rhyming kits, ESL vocabulary cards, and binder rings to accumulate sight words to improve literacy.
