Students Gravitate to Graphic Novels

My students need motivation to read, as some are reluctant readers, and these 39 graphic novels are a proven way to get them interested.

My Students

For "reluctant readers," graphic novels offer an insight into the context of the author's words through their illustrations. When students have poor reading comprehension skills, they are less likely to want to read, creating a self-fulfilling prophecy of, "I won't read because I can't do it."

My classroom is made up of an assortment of different reading levels.

They range from students in 7th grade who read at a 4th grade level all the way to students who read at a post-high school level. Approximately 20% of my students have an IEP for a learning disability, mostly in reading. My students live in an urban neighborhood in Pennsylvania. The vast majority of them qualify for free lunch and some of them have even been homeless in the last 12-24 months. They attend a school that is "up-and-coming" in the district, yet our scores in reading lag behind those in math. In order to get my "reluctant readers" interested in books, I need to do something different.

My Project

For my project, I am requesting an assortment of graphic novels covering various topics, including historical nonfiction, science, and sports. According to Scholastic, "Graphic novels can dramatically help improve reading development for students struggling with language acquisition, including special-needs students, as the illustrations provide contextual clues to the meaning of the written narrative." Although I have books in my classroom, I have noticed that some of my students who are not very strong readers have not had much interest in books even though they are on their level. This is especially true with my students with reading disabilities. I aim to craft a library that targets all of my students' wants and needs. I am also requesting two chairs for my classroom library, as a student who is comfortable is more likely to focus on their reading than a child who is not.

This project is important to me as I have realized that simply offering books on an assortment of levels is not a sufficient way to create a library for all of my students.

Although I do not teach literacy, I want my students to always have a place to go to grab a book and have a comfortable place to read it. With your help, I can come this much closer to achieving that goal.
