Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In the fall, I had surgery to repair a ruptured Achilles tendon, and I just returned to school in February. I needed to adjust my middle school elective units to include more student choreography as I continue to recover from surgery. My fifth and sixth-grade students are choreographing dances about their favorite work of visual art. My seventh and eighth-grade students are creating original choreography using movements from their cultural dance forms.

I am so inspired by the original choreography my students are creating and would like to give them multiple options for their costumes for our culminating performance.

The students have been brainstorming ideas and would like to accessorize in original ways. We will begin with a black base of pants, shorts, leggings, or skirts. Students will select a shirt and accessory that connects to the colors in their artwork or their country's flag. I am excited to help them bring their ideas to life!

Our culminating performance will take place in our school's annual Festival of the Arts. Students will perform their choreography for an audience of family and friends. Their entire production will be student-led, and I am so proud of what my students are accomplishing.
