Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My students are special because they try very hard to be successful despite socioeconomic challenges. Many want to become lawyers or go into law enforcement. We are a Title I school serving a high-need population with dedicated teachers to support our students' dreams and help them overcome systemic barriers.

One such barrier is hunger.

We have a surprisingly large number of homeless students. Many of my students come to school with little to no food in their bellies. Some kids with special needs won’t eat in the cafeteria because they’re overwhelmed with the noise.

Every day I hear stomachs growling, kids asking me if I have anything to eat, and children putting their heads down because they feel dizzy or have a headache from lack of proper nutrition.

Undernourished kids are highly susceptible to germs, which are rampant in a school setting as it is. I received a grant last year of Clorox wipes, hand sanitizer and boxes of Kleenex and noticed a huge reduction in absences. I’m repeating this project to ensure my students are kept nourished and germ-free.

My Project

Homelessness is at crisis proportions in our NYC public school system. Teachers realize that students can't learn when they are hungry, sick and feeling that their situation is hopeless.

I can't tell you how many times as a teacher I have had students beg me for something to eat.

Others have simply suffered in silence. I can't let a child go through the day without something to eat.

Teachers create an environment of caring to ensure their students' needs are met so that they are equipped for learning. Please help me with this monumental task to provide them with nourishment and supplies to keep them germ-free and healthy.
