Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In the first 15 minutes I give students a prompt they respond to in their notebook which may include a quote and asking for their opinion, a short reading with 1-2 questions, or a political cartoon and their interpretation which leads to the lesson for the day and I hope a connection to themselves.

My students are inquisitive, bright, and the neighborhood's pride and joy.

We do not bus students in and the majority have grown up in the neighborhood attending the local elementary and middle schools. Many students will be first generation college students and in fact many will be the first to graduate from high school. The school is fairly new opening in 2006 and small with approximately 1600 students compared to the neighboring high school which is over 100 years old and 3500 students. The school is in a neighborhood densely populated and it is not uncommon to find students and their families renting one room or a garage which many times are not permitted. There is high unemployment, crime, and many other obstacles students face including illegal residential status, and even homelessness. Despite many obstacles our students succeed and most set goals for a post secondary education.

My Project

I consistently use various strategies to teach the material and skills to students. Placing students in groups to work on assignments and projects is one strategy I use to foster learning. Many times as professionals when we attend workshops we are placed in groups to discuss and write our thoughts, and learning on large sheets of paper. I find that when I place students of varying abilities together they help each other learn rather than if I were to simply instruct them to read a passage silently. Large drawing paper allows students to collaborate with others and share with the class their findings. I use large drawing paper for students to create graphic organizers, storyboards, or their own political cartoon. In addition, I use numerous kinds of material such as non-text materials, such as political cartoons to teach concepts. In addition I find that using colored paper to make copies of assignments helps students keep organized and from losing the assignments.

Drawing paper of various sizes would be extremely useful for those lessons which require us to put students in groups to brainstorm ideas and work on various assignments and projects.

In addition I like to post their work on the wall and when done on large sheets of paper is much more visible. Colored copy paper would help students get organized and keep track of assignments. I find that when I use colored paper students are less likely to lose their assignments and turn them in complete.
