My Students

Social skills come naturally to most of the general population. What might be considered simple to most such as the use of appropriate volume/tone, eye contact, and turning our body in the direction of the speaker, can be a source of great anxiety for many of my students.

I teach at a Title One High School in Southern California.

My students are in a program for students with special needs. The Alternate Curriculum Guide for Students with Moderate to Severe Disabilities provides the standards on which our program is based. The curriculum focuses on building students’ social, vocational and independent living skills. My students are incredibly loving, caring, compassionate and hardworking individuals who bring a sense of joy and inspiration to those the lives of those they touch. A question that I hear repeatedly is, “Do you find your job emotionally difficult?” Consistently, my response is; “My students are the most uplifting, inspirational and amazing people I have ever met! I am truly blessed to have them in my life.”

My Project

Video modeling is a research based approach in which students create and then watch films of themselves or their peers performing specific tasks. The camcorder will be used to record students with and without disabilities performing targeted behaviors, i.e. beginning and ending conversations, turn taking and asking for help. Skills will be broken down into specific steps so that the learner(s) can best assimilate information. Use of this technique has been proved highly beneficial for students with autism and other developmental disabilities. Donations made to this request will change student’s lives by empowering them with feelings of confidence and security. This will enable them to take risks as they encounter new opportunities in the future.

Recently, my students started their own on campus business, Cougar Coffee Café.

Students prepare and deliver freshly brewed coffee and baked goods to our school staff. This is a shining example of a real life learning opportunity that will be enhanced through the use of video modeling. The skills they learn will serve them as they leave the comforts of high school and pursue their dreams of living increasingly independent lives.
