My Project

It is no surprise that today's youngest students need support in developing their social-emotional skills. Today's kindergartners were just emerging toddlers when the pandemic struck, and they missed out on critical opportunities to socialize with their peers. My five-, six-. and seven-year-olds in particular need to learn how to manage not only their own emotions but also to navigate situations where others are having a hard time regulating. In addition, parents of these young children are anxious to help their children succeed at home and at school, and many do not know where to start.

I am creating a library of books and tools to help my students and their families develop critical social skills, nurture empathy, and develop self-confidence, all while bolstering positive home environments and life-long mental health.

Books and stories are particularly effective in teaching young children because they see themselves in the characters in the story and internalize the successes and skills these characters experience each time the story is read. Also, I want to be able to offer the many parents in my building with unconventional families access to tools that will help them understand themselves, their children, and the demands of parenting in the digital age.

My project includes developmental tools like kinetic sand and items to improve my office space so it is warm and welcoming. I've also included a laminator that will help me customize and preserve content that may be used and shared for many years by many families and children.

My district is in a historic budget crisis, and our $13 million dollar deficit will mean significant cuts to critical resources. Please help me reach more students beyond my caseload by empowering classroom teachers and providing materials I can loan to students and their families when they need support.
