Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

In their last two years of high school, many of my students find themselves feeling overwhelmed; they focus their energies on applying for college, taking standardized exams, volunteering, participating in school teams and clubs, learning the English language, adapting to a new culture, and saving up for their prom and senior dues. Many of them even hold full-time jobs in order to help their families.

The majority of my students come from immigrant families and many are the first in their families to apply to college.

They are hard-working, inquisitive and deserve a moment in their hectic academic days where they can mentally, physically and emotionally decompress.

They have chosen to take a Mindful Movement elective in order to learn yoga and meditation techniques to help them navigate emotions, stress, and anxiety. They have advocated for each other by expressing feeling overwhelmed and in need of classes where they can learn how to manage their daily stresses.

My Project

In my yoga classes, students sit in the shape of a circle because they learn that one of the many definitions of yoga is “to yoke”, to come together. Students learn that we all have different types of bodies, abilities, and beliefs. They let go of comparing themselves to each other and embrace self-care and community. Through individual and group exercises students will use the yoga blocks to support their bodies through different poses. Blocks can bring the ground closer and prevent injuries by accommodating students’ different body types and needs. They can be used as a way to cushion the ground for a seat. The blocks will be available for all students in the class, as each mat will be accompanied by two blocks and a blanket. Throughout the class, students have the choice to use the blocks as needed.

During savasana, corpse pose or final resting pose, students lay on their backs to reach deep relaxation by relaxing their muscles and quieting their minds.

During this pose, the body’s temperature slightly lowers and the use of blankets will allow students to comfortably end their practice. They can also use the blankets as a cushion for their knees along with other ways to support their yoga.

Yoga calms the mind, decreases depression, anxiety, and other health issues. Studies show that yoga in schools helps foster students’ social-emotional learning: self-awareness, self-management, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness. I will be using Breathe For Change’s Social Emotional Learning and Facilitation curriculum in this class. As an alumna from my school, I want to teach my students the self-care skills I needed when I was their age and I want to continue to foster a supportive community.
