My Students

I love my fifth graders! Our Title One school in New York City is comprised of a diverse group of students, a large majority of whom receive free lunch.

Our students are very energetic and have very different learning styles, abilities, and needs.

Many of our students have learning disabilities and some of our students have fallen behind since the COVID-19 pandemic.

It is very important for us to encourage both group work, especially during these times, and independent work so our students can succeed academically and socially. In order to do this, we have to appeal to our students' interests by staying up-to-date with technology. Many of our students do not have computers, tablets, or internet at home. In order to succeed today, we want to expose them to this technology as much as possible in school!

My Project

My 5th graders are immersed in reading and writing every day. One of the most BASIC needs of young writers is the tools to write! Our students often do not come to school with the supplies they need to learn! We need crayons, folders, staplers, pencil sharpener, and laminating sheets to help create charts and notes, and to help revise & edit, organize, and plan our writing. Laminating sheets are crucial for their tool kits. Papers are constantly getting lost or ripped. Laminating sheets will allow us to laminate the important resources we provide our students to help them access this very rigorous curriculum. Today, 5th graders are expected to annotate complex texts, write different kinds of essays, write news reports and stories! Our students are constantly needing their pencils sharpened. We would love to have a pencil sharpener available to them. The level of their writing is going to be pushed this year as we prepare them for middle school. In order to feel empowered,​ they need the necessary tools to make writing feel fun and easy!
