My Students

In northern Miami lies a diverse, loving, and energetic community that needs assistance. About 80% of the population is of Haitian descent and 12% is Hispanic making English their second language. Many families have recently migrated to the United States in search for a better life and to achieve the American dream. Unfortunately, these students have numerous obstacles in their path to success.

As in most major inner-cities, our students face staggering crime rates, gang recruitment, and extreme poverty.

The teachers and staff at the school are charged with keeping students on the right track and helping to reduce the educational inequity that currently exists.

My Project

School culture plays a large role in advancing a student's learning. Our school is a PBS (positive behavior support) school in which we reward behaviors that will help students to become successful such as promptness, effort, and focus. Every 9 weeks our students will receive points for various aspects of their learning including Academic & Conduct grades and number of tardies. Students can then use these points to purchase items in the school store: gym sacks, headphones, Samsung Galaxy tablets and emoji socks. The tablets will sure be an exciting item for students to be able to buy with their points.

We want to create an incentive for students to improve their behavior, come on time, and complete their homework.

All of these factors will help to create a better learning environment and students will be placed on a path towards success. We need items to stock this school store so that students are excited and energized to improve their overall learning experience in school. Our students have the capability to achieve and become proficient in every subject and as teachers it is our job to demonstrate, guide, teach and reinforce the skills that will help them to succeed.

Ms. Mullin North Miami Middle School Grades 6-8
