Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

The challenge in learning something new is in applying the skills just after exposure and receiving immediate feedback. The ideal would certainly be for each student to work one-on-one with a teacher, but this isn't possible when I have 22 students.

I teach in one of Boston's Public School's turnaround schools.

This means that it was taken over last school year and the principal and majority of the staff were replaced. Now we have three years to bring up our scores. Our students are mostly second-language learners and many of them come from single-parent families. 94% of our students live below the poverty line, and so they receive free breakfast and lunch at school. My class this year is amazing. They are motivated, thoughtful, fun, and showing great potential. They love to read and are making excellent progress towards their end-of-the-year goals.

My Project

I would like a class set of magnetic boards because they will provide a fast, easy, and clean way to assess my students' understanding of a topic during a lesson. Whether they will write a spelling word, solve a math problem, or draw a geometric shape, I can quickly see how they are doing with a topic. As we sit on the rug during a lesson, they can respond to a question and hold up their boards all at once, which allows me to quickly see whether we need more time on the subject, or whether I just need to work with a few students later. They will be reused for many activities, and for many years. I would also like the set of phonics activity cards that go with the boards. The phonics pack will be a great independent activity to build literacy skills. Student complete words according to phonics principles that we have been practicing. It will build their writing skills, and their ability to apply conventions in their spelling.

This project is really exciting because it means I can be more direct in my teaching.

Instead of just calling on one student to answer at a time, I will be able to check in on ALL the students' understandings in the moment, and adjust my teaching accordingly. Furthermore, they have limitless potential for hands-on practice in the classroom, and provide a tree-friendly alternative that makes work fun. I know I will only continue to find ways to use this engaging resource.
