About My Students

Katie is one of my students and is a perfectionist and incredibly hard worker. She is always trying to learn more about how to speak German perfectly and help add to the positive atmosphere of the classroom. Katie is sensitive and needs a way to participate without critical feedback and withing a space where she doesn't feel watched.

Standing in front of the class for presentations fills her with dread, and she is not alone. We have students in our program that are so shy that the idea of a class presentation fills them with anxiety. Last week three students came to me asking for an option to show their mastery of German without standing in front of a room full of people. They are not alone- many students have performance anxiety and need to build confidence to help them share what they know.

We will be learning about different types of food and healthy eating in German class. Savanna in our German 2 class planned a lesson about learning the names for German food and a lesson about shopping for food in German. We will use these items to go shopping after we plan our menu in German. This will teach us how to have healthier lives and plan a budget for eating. Learning how to plan a menu helps with real life skills. Students will develop healthier eating habits and learn German. Students will have an authentic learning experience about shopping in Germany.

In Their Own Words

I am trying to have us be more fluent in German in asking for food and what we will eat for breakfast lunch and dinner. We want to learn more about healthy eating habits in Germany and plan a menu. I can teach them how to plan a menu and a budget and then we will do those things in German.

I am going to teach younger students what they eat in Germany and how it is different than America. I am going to teach students German and also help make a difference in student lives so they can plan what to eat and make a menu. I am looking forward to teaching students something I care about.

American youth struggle with obesity and we want to learn more about making good choices. I want to visit Germany and if we know about German food we can order food. We need to learn more vocabulary in German and I care about healthy eating and being the best language. Real life experiences help students learn language better and get healthier.
